Monday was a sad day for horse lovers; early Monday morning at least 27 horses were killed as fire engulfed three barns located next to Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races.

At 4.40 a.m. seven fire departments attended a fire at three wooden barns adjacent to Ranson’s Charles Town Races. The stables have been described as being older wooden structures and two were completely destroyed in the fire, with a third adjacent barn being damaged. The barns are thought to have been being used to house horses attending Charles Town Races. Two of the barns were owned by Sharon and Freddy Johnson and the other by Steve Spears.

The owners of the 27 deceased horses are currently unknown, and some 20 more horses were rescued from the property. 25 of the deceased horses were being housed in just one of the barns. The property damage has been estimated at being over $1 million and each of the horses are thought to be worth at least $10,000 each. Charles Town Races operated as usual the next day, but opened an unused barn to accommodate horses displaced by the fire.

According to the Washington Post, state fire marshals on the scene have made the early assumption that the fire was probably accidental. Two people, a casino employee and a firefighter, suffered minor injuries while battling the blaze. Charles Town Races opened in 1933 and is home to the West Virginia Breeders Classics. There is racing approximately 220 days per year and simulcast horse and dog racing 365 days a year.

Being underage is never fun – especially not when you’re in Vegas. Trying to get around the laws could land you, and your chosen establishment, in a ton of hot water. So, if you find yourself in Vegas and you’re a minor, you probably shouldn’t be in a casino. Punishments in general depend on the infraction’s scope, and could involve verbal warnings, fines, or in extreme cases suspending an operator’s gambling license

If you DO end up in a casino, please don’t Tweet about it.

MGM Resorts International was under investigation after Marcus Jordan, the underage son of basketball great Michael Jordan, bragged on Twitter about partying at a Las Vegas Strip nightclub.

“Last night was stupid… 35K at Haze,” (at Aria Resort & Casino) the University of Central Florida sophomore guard said. “Totals 50K something the whole day.” The tweet was quickly removed from his feed, but the damage was done.

Jordan told a Fox Sports website last week that the tweet was a mistake and said he had conversations with both his parents about it.

“I didn’t mean it the way it came across,” he said. “My family and friends know the type of person I am.”

Mr. Jordan, if you spent $50,000 on something OTHER than gambling in Las Vegas, we probably need to talk. There are only a few things that money could be spent on, and you’re too young for ALL of them. May I suggest you send that money on up my way if you get the urge to do this again? Cheers.

Texas Cheatem, that’s what Wide Load Games calls their version of Texas holdem poker. Their advertisements say “Do it in Vegas, and you’ll get blacklisted. Do it in Atlantic City, you get arrested. But if you cheat in this game, and you just might win.”

According to the advertisement, you can cheat with magical powers like x-ray vision and precognition or regular skills like chip stealing and card swapping. The more you cheat, the more you win. Some people out there in the poker world are aghast that anyone would offer such a game. After all, it teaches people to cheat at poker, and even glorifies it.

I have to disagree. It reminds me of a spoof article I once read about a boy being arrested for jumping on turtles, kicking them around, eating mushrooms, and then jumping down a drainpipe to escape after playing Super Mario. Let’s face it, we know the difference between a video game and the real world. Back in the 90′s, there was a racecar game called Wacky Wheels. You drove a racecar, and you could fire rockets, bomb your opponents, and even fire hedgehogs in order to win the race. Did the children who played this game then try those tricks when they went go-carting? Not likely.

X-ray vision and precognition aren’t even an option in reality, so players understand that the game is not the same as real life. As a game, it’s probably quite a lot of fun to be able to play with rules that don’t apply at a regular poker table. It probably appeals most strongly to teens who like to break the rules, rather than to older players.

What Texas Cheatem has going against it is the fact that it teaches players poor technique. Instead of learning how to play Texas holdem with good strategy and leaning the logic and odds behind the game, Texas Cheatem adds bells and whistles to keep up the players’ interest. There are roulette, horse-racing, slots, and blackjack rounds that are used to determine whether the player is allowed to switch their card with the community card. In some ways, it gives a whole casino in one game.

On the whole, it’s a game that’s likely to appeal to some. It’s fast-paced, and it has more going on than an average game of poker. For those who really enjoy Texas holdem, this is not the kind of game that’s likely to appeal, though. It’s more likely to annoy.

Three card poker is a really easy game to play. You have three circles where you can place a wager. Ante up and decide whether or not to place a pairs plus bet, and then you get your three cards. If they’re good enough, double your ante and keep playing. If the dealer doesn’t get at least a queen, then you get even money on your ante and your play bet is a push. If you have a hand better than a pair and you made a pairs plus bet, you get money for that bet too. If you have one of the top three hands – a straight, three of a kind, or a straight flush, you get a bonus whether or not you made a pairs plus bet.

The odds vary wildly from casino to casino. The regular game odds are pretty straight, ranging from a house edge of 3.37% to one of 4.28%. It’s when you get to the pairs plus odds that you really hit a wide range on the house edge. The house edge can range from 2.32% to 7.28%. That means that you’ll have to know how to read a payout table to determine whether to make the pairs plus bet. If the house edge on the pairs plus bet is 2.32%, then it’s a great bet compared to a house edge of over 3%. If it’s over 7%, on the other hand, it’s a sucker’s bet.

The payout tables with the worst odds aren’t the ones with the lowest payouts on the straight flush. In fact, if the payout on the straight flush is higher than 40:1, you should be suspicious. Instead, you should look at the payout on the more common wins. Pairs always pay 1:1, but a flush should always pay 4:1. If it doesn’t, don’t bother to play the pairs plus bet. Likewise, a straight should always pay 6:1. If those two are correct, chances are that the house edge is 4.58% or less. The best pay table runs 1/4/6/30/40. Remember, though, that the flush and straight are really crucial since you’re much more likely to get one of those than a straight flush or three of a kind.

If you’re in Las Vegas and you see a payout table that isn’t good, play a different game. Remember that the only way to punish a casino for having poor payout tables on a game is to refuse to play that game. If a game doesn’t generate business

You never hear about the Japanese gambling scene, because apparently casinos are not legal in Japan. On the other hand, pachinko is a Japanese gambling game. Pachinko parlors are legal, and Japan is actually number two in the world in terms of the number of gaming machines, but the laws regarding casinos and online casinos are somewhat muddled in Japan. Japan accounts for the second largest number of players in Asia despite its relatively small population, and the popularity of online casinos is on the rise in Japan.

There is a lot of speculation as to why the Japanese play so much at online casinos. One thought is that the culture of pachinko play makes Japanese think of casino play as an activity, whereas people of many other nationalities don’t consider gambling entertainment in the way that they would consider going to a movie or a show.

In Las Vegas, where most vacationers are American, the casinos have jacuzzis, spas, shows, children’s activities, and fine dining. This is true of Macau too, which is the prime destination for Japanese tourists looking to gamble, but for the Japanese, the gambling itself is considered part of the entertainment.

While many players claim that gambling is just for fun, the reality is that most people at the casinos are hoping to win a jackpot. They don’t go in the hopes of playing some good games. They go with plans to win big and usually already have their spending planned. According to some in the gambling industry, this is less true of the average Japanese gambler. The average Japanese gambler enjoys the game and plays for the challenge and the fun.

While casino play has stagnated in Las Vegas and other American land-based casinos over the past few years, Macau has experienced steady growth. This is partially due to the fact that the recession that has hit America has not hit the rest of the world so hard. Another factor is the fact that gambling of any sort is illegal in China, and the crackdown has forced more Chinese punters to head for Macau. There are no legal land-based gambling establishments in mainland China, and online gambling is strictly forbidden.

To enforce the ban on online gambling, the internet service providers of China have what is known as the “Great Firewall of China.” Computer operators located in China using Chinese internet are blocked from accessing online gambling sites. This blockage is required by the Chinese government, and includes all gambling sites, as well as other sites deemed inappropriate by the Chinese government.

As a result, Chinese online gambling is uncommon, while Japanese online gambling is becoming ever more popular.

In my last post, I criticized the idea of the Tropicana eDeck, and compared having your children with you while gambling to images of Marge Simpson letting Baby Maggie loose in a casino. I’ve since discovered that there is a worse option. The Associated Press is reporting that Edwine Louissaint, 33 and David Augustin, 34 left two children, aged ten and one, in their car in the Foxwoods parking lot while they went inside to gamble. Cantor Gaming, all is forgiven. If parents are so addicted to gambling that they’ll leave their children unattended in the car if that’s the only way they can get their fix, then the eDeck is at least a step above that. At least your child won’t accidentally die of heatstroke or be kidnapped while you’re getting your fix.

For that matter, online casinos look better and better. The kids can be asleep in their beds and their parents can get their fix online. Of course, if you bring the casino into Augustin and Louissaint’s home, they might forget to feed the kids dinner.

The press is reporting that the parents were arrested and arraigned. Louissaint was released on bail, but the children were placed in protective custody. Lieutenant Paul Vance, chief spokesman for the Connecticut State Police said “We have a very strict law relative to this sort of thing. People think they can leave their kids in hotel rooms or otherwise unattended. But that is a big no-no in Connecticut.’’

So here’s the questions, Lieutenant Vance. Do the hotels offer babysitting? Do the police go room to room checking if there are children alone? There’s a real disconnect here. People who have gambling problems are often unable to relate consequences to their actions. They’ll think that they can hit the casino floor for a few minutes while the kids are sleeping, but a few minutes will turn into a few hours. Let’s face it, it happens to all of us, and not just with gambling. Ever play only one game of solitaire or freecell on your computer? Ever eat one potato chip?

What are the options for parents vacationing with their children if they want to hit the casino floor? Are they forced to take turns taking care of the children? What if you’re a single parent? Maybe the reality here is simpler. If you’re a parent, you shouldn’t be planning your vacation around gambling. You might go to a destination with a casino and plan to take a little spin on the casino floor while your partner or a babysitter watches the kids, but if you’re vacationing with the kids, try doing something they can do. Save the gambling for your adults-only vacations.

Whether you’re looking at banks of machines in Atlantic City or Las Vegas casinos or choosing a slot machine at an online casino, there are a lot of different options, and they’re not all the same.

The first thing you should be aware of is the coin value of the machine. There are slot machines that ask for five dollars every spin, and slot machines that ask for ten cents a spin. It’s important to choose a machine that fits your budget. If you have ten dollars, a five dollar machine won’t give you much play, so you should look for a machine with a very low coin value.

The next thing to be aware of is how many paylines the machine has. In the old days, a machine had a single winning line. If the three symbols in the middle held a winning combination, you won a prize. It didn’t matter what happened in the lines above or below the middle line. Some machines are still like that. Other machines allow you to play the lines above and below the middle line. Still others allow you to play additional paylines which cross through the reels in a number of patterns. Since often you are only eligible for top prizes if you’ve played all of the paylines, you should be sure to be aware of the cost of playing all of the paylines at once.

Another thing to be aware of is the subject of progressive jackpots. If you’re a high roller, this is one way to make a fortune, but it’s risky. The chances of hitting the jackpot is quite low. On the other hand, the jackpot on a progressive jackpot machine is always growing. Frequently, a progressive jackpot machine is networked. Players throughout Las Vegas may be contributing to a single jackpot, or all of the players on a online casino network may be connected in order to contribute to a jackpot. Every time a player adds a coin to that machine type, money is added to the jackpot, making the jackpot’s potential all but infinite. The downside, however, is that machines with a progressive jackpot tend to have a lower payout overall than regular ‘flat top’ slot machines.

Once you are aware of these main differences, all that remains is choosing a theme you enjoy and having a great time!

Sometimes called Pai Gow Poker, Pai Gow isn’t really a poker game, because there is no betting, bluffing, or competition against other players. In this table game, you and the dealer each receive seven cards. From those seven cards, you need to make two hands. The first hand is a five card hand and the second is a two card hand. The five card hand is ranked basically like a regular poker hand, except that in some casinos, such as those in Vegas, A-2-3-4-5 is ranked higher than 9-10-J-Q-K. The lower hand is ranked based on high cards or pairs. The player must arrange the two hands so that the five card hand is valued higher than the two card hand, meaning that if there is only one pair and no straights or flushes, it remains in the five card hand. If there is no pair at all, the highest card must remain in the five card hand. Like in blackjack, the player’s hand is compared only to the dealer’s hand. The two different hands are compared to the dealer’s two different hands. If the player wins both, the player wins. If the player wins one and the dealer wins one, the round is a push. If the dealer wins both, the player loses his wager. In the case where a specific hand is a push, meaning, for example that both hold 3,4 for the lower hand, then the dealer is considered the winner, giving a very slight house edge. The rest of the house edge is achieved by the casino taking a 5% rake of the player’s winnings. Some casinos take a 5% rake of every wager, but this is rare, particularly at online casinos. Be sure to check before you play.

Red Dog
Red Dog is sometimes called Acey-Deucey or In Between. Some casinos call it Red Dog Poker, but it bears absolutely no resemblance to poker. A player makes a wager and the dealer places two cards on the table. If the first two cards are consecutive, for example three four or jack queen, then the round is a push, and the bet is returned. If the two cards are the same, a third card is dealt. If it, too, is the same, the player receives eleven times the value of their bet. If the first two cards are more than one apart, a spread is declared. For example, if the first two cards are ace and three, then the spread is one number large. If the third card is in the spread, the player wins. Otherwise, the player loses their bet.

The camera seems to show roulette, craps, slots, and blackjack, and ignore all other casino games, while ignoring games like baccarat, keno, and video poker, all of which are even more popular than craps. The reason is clear. Visually, it is easy to show a roulette wheel spinning and hitting or missing just the right pocket. It’s easy to show the dice landing just perfectly or exactly wrong. It’s simple to show a slot machine spitting out coins. Since blackjack is well known, it’s not hard to show a blackjack or a bust and have the audience understand exactly what has happened.

In reality, though, craps isn’t nearly as popular as other games. This is probably because craps looks like a very a complicated game. It doesn’t have to be all that complicated, though. If you’re not playing craps, you’re really missing out. If you’re a craps beginner, you can play a simple bet like the pass line bet. It’s an easy bet to play. If the shooter hits seven or eleven on the first roll, you win. Two, three, or twelve is a lose. Any other number becomes the point. Once a point is rolled, the goal is to have it rolled again before the next seven is rolled. Once a point has been called, you can get true odds on additional bets on the point number. This improves your odds by far, so it’s a good idea to take this bet. Take advantage of it to the maximum allowed by the casino and your bankroll.

There seem to be dozens of different types of bets to play in craps. There are boxcars and snake eyes bets. There are single number bets which are for a single roll, and there are single number bets which can be placed on a number being rolled before a seven is rolled. There are also hardway bets, meaning that you wager that the numbers 4,6,8, or 10 will come up as doubles before they come up as another combination on the dice. These seem quite complicated, but you don’t need to play all of these different combinations to enjoy a game of craps. Instead, put your money on the pass line or the don’t pass line and watch the shooter to join the excitement.

If you want to have a great poker party, it’s not very difficult, nor is it very expensive. Just follow this easy guide to help you get started. First, you’ll want to decide how many guests you’re having. If you’re having a lot of guests, you’ll need to set up a tournament, which is more difficult than setting up a regular game. Texas hold’em is best played with up to eight players at a table. This is the limit for most online casinos. Some Las Vegas casinos prefer to keep the tables even smaller. You can also choose to let people play ring games without any tournament structure. Another option is simply to assume that not everyone will want to play at once.

To determine the number of tables you’ll need, you should divide the number of guests by eight. For every eight players, you’ll need a deck of cards, a package of multi-colored chips, and a dealer button. You can choose to play for something other than chips, such as candies or peanuts, but players may end up eating the antes. If you want the party to stay fun and light rather than getting into a serious poker game, this is a perfect way to do it. You can use Skittles, M&Ms, Smarties, or Reeses Pieces as chips. Try making each color have a different value, and you’ll confuse everyone hopelessly. Remember, though, that this type of play encourages cheating, particularly by eating the opponent’s chips.

For a dealer button, all you need is a sign of who the current dealer is. A piece of cardboard with a D on it is fine, but you can lighten the mood by making the dealer wear a funny hat, or make the game seem more serious by buying a professional set that comes with a dealer button. For cards, you’ll need to buy a deck of poker cards and remove the jokers. These can be purchased at toy or hobby shops or, for an authentic feel, you can get a leftover deck from a Las Vegas casino or another land-based casino. Casinos use each deck only once, and after a use, they punch a hole in them. These authentic cards usually say the name of the casino and are a complete deck, other than the hole punched in the middle.

Once you have your cards, your chips, and your dealer button, you’re ready to play poker. Add a green tablecloth, and you’ll feel like you’re really at the felts.
