Unfortunately, their holdings company, the Riviera Holdings Corp, has filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy. According to the casino operator, the recession has hit the casino too hard for them to continue paying their loans, and Riviera Holdings Corp. has defaulted on over $225 million in loans from Wachovia Bank. The terms of the bankruptcy will transfer the properties to the lenders, which means that for now, both the Riviera Hotel and Casino and its sister operation the Riviera Black Hawk Casino in Colorado will be able to continue operating.

The news, though far from shocking, is a bad sign for the land-based casino world. Even with the UIGEA in place, more and more bettors are placing their wagers online. Moreover, state after state is opening or expanding their casinos making Las Vegas much less of a casino destination than it used to be. The current downturn in the economy means that more Americans are doing without vacations, staying closer to home, and spending less money when they do vacation. For Californians who used to drive to Las Vegas for a weekend, economic hardship coupled with rising gasoline prices have made the trip much less appealing.

The trend is likely to get worse before it gets better. Casinos around the United States are feeling the pinch. The only ones profiting are the online casinos. If the government doesn’t move to allow America’s land-based casinos to offer online games, they simply won’t be able to continue operating, meaning lost revenues from taxes, lost jobs for those employed by the casinos, and the end of an era for Las Vegas.

The Las Vegas Strip casinos are working hard to bring in more customers and keep them at the tables longer, but the reality is that fewer tourists are even making it into Las Vegas these days. Those who do want to play for lower stakes, and those who do play higher stakes are often those who can ill afford the losses, meaning the casinos are often forced to turn down their credit cards and send them on their way.

The basic responsibilities of a pit boss are many. They watch the opening and closing count for each table that they supervise each shift. They supervise any chips or cash brought to the table. They keep an eye out for cheating of any sort. A pit boss watches for players who are acting in a suspicious manner, signs that decks of cards could be marked, opportunities for switching cards, dice, and chips. They also oversee any dispute that arises at the tables. If a player says that a dealer misplaced his chips, gave him the wrong winnings, or made any other mistake, the pit boss is immediately called over to verify the problem and oversee the solution.

The pit boss has to motivate the dealers and keep them working on his or her team. Dealers need to know that they can count on immediate support from the pit boss, even while the pit boss must always be polite and considerate to the customer. Balancing the need to keep customer relations good and the rapport with the dealer excellent can be one of the hardest aspects of the pit boss career.

If a player is drunk or belligerent or the player appears to be cheating, it is the job of the pit manager to deal with the situation. If the player is drunk, often they will simply try to have the player escorted to their hotel room. If the player is causing a scene, the pit boss has the job of trying to calm the situation and keeping it from escalating. In rare cases, they may need to call security, but it is their job to avoid that need as much as possible.

The salary for a pit boss is good, but not incredible. Salaries tend to be $50,000-$70,000 a year in the United States, depending upon the region and type of casino. Many dealers don’t try to become a pit boss because a good dealer can make nearly as much money through his tips without taking on the same kind of responsibility.

Some of the move is economic. Machines that aren’t played but are out on the floor still require maintenance. As a result, if machines aren’t played to a reasonable capacity most of the time, the casino prefers to pull them from the floor. Machines that stop generating interest are pulled to make room. That room can be for machines that do generate interest or it can be room for larger aisles. Over recent years, casino patrons have started wanting more floor space, more air, and a better overall experience.

In January 2005, there were nearly 42,000 slot machines in Atlantic City. These days, there are around 29,000. Atlantic City casino executives point some of the blame at the Pennsylvania casinos which have opened their slot machines to compete with Atlantic City, drawing customers not only from Pennsylvania, but also from many communities in northern New Jersey. For residents of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, for example, the Bensalem, Pennsylvania casino is around a 45-minute drive, while Atlantic City would take about twice that in driving time.

Connecticut, Delaware, New York, Rhode Island, and West Virginia are also noting slumps in slots machine revenues and have taken some of their machines off of the floors. Mitchell Etess, CEO of the Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut said “Basically, we’re just reacting to a lack of demand. If there isn’t a demand for a large number of machines, there’s no need to have them out.”

In Delaware, the introduction of table games is hoped to even out some of the loss in slot machine revenue. For Atlantic City, though, the decline just continues. The casinos are going to have to find more ways to appeal to the public. For those who remember Atlantic City before the casinos, the beaches, the boardwalk, the peanuts, and the salt-water taffy have been lost in the blur of casinos. Maybe it’s time to demolish some casinos instead of trying to spread the meager profits among so many casinos and let the city return to its former glory.

Watanbe filed a claim against Harrah’s with Nevada’s Gaming Control Board. According to Watanbe, he was served alcohol and illegal prescription drugs at the casino, and was allowed to continue gambling even when he was visibly intoxicated. According to Nevada law, casinos may not accept wagers from visibly intoxicated patrons. According to Watanbe’s statements, he frequently gambled while mostly asleep and drunk.

The court dismissed the case after Harrah’s and Watanbe agreed to go to binding arbitration. This does not close the case filed by Nevada’s Gaming Control Board, but industry experts do not believe that Harrah’s will see much more than a fine and a warning even if it is found that they acted against regulations.

It looks like one of those cases where everyone’s wrong. If Harrah’s or any of their employees gave a patron prescription drugs, that’s pretty serious wrongdoing. It’s one thing to offer someone a cocktail and hope it will loosen them and their wallets, but handing them a Valium or a Vicodan is a whole different ballgame. That’s a criminal offense. The fact that the DA is letting that go makes me wonder if that really happened. Maybe it was a one-time thing. Maybe Watanbe had a monster hangover and a casino employee offered him something a little stronger to deal with the headache. I’m guessing if it were a regular occurrence, we’d be hearing more about that. Even assuming that the prescription drugs charge is overplayed or inaccurate, though, the pit boss and dealers shouldn’t be allowing people who look like they’re not keeping their heads to be out on the floor. It’s a matter of safety for other patrons, not to mention just bad practice. If the man enjoys his game, he’ll be back when the whiskey wears off, too, and he’ll be glad that his wallet isn’t completely empty when he wakes up in the morning.

On the other hand, personal responsibility plays a role here. If you’ve already racked up a million dollars in casino losses, then it’s time to admit you have a gambling problem. There are plenty of ways to get help. If you don’t get that help, you bear culpability for what happens next, and you shouldn’t be able to blame the casino for your irresponsible behavior.
