Casinos are designed to keep people inside; to be absolutely timeless. If you’re with some friends and having a good time, this is a good thing. If you leave your toddler in the back seat of your van, this is a bad thing.

A man who left his toddler son in a freezing van while he gambled in a Calgary casino will not face a criminal charge of child abandonment. The court that heard his case withdrew the charge, provided he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge. The man received a one year conditional sentence.

Now, I’m all for justice AND the freedom to gamble, but this makes my blood boil. Leaving a child or an animal in a car in ANY extreme weather is despicable. According to witnesses, the temperature was minus 9C, and the child was only discovered by casino workers who heard him crying. Firefighters were able to rescue him by breaking into the car.

Please, if you have a child and would like to gamble, find a babysitter. Casinos might be no place for toddlers, but freezing cars are quite a bit worse.

There are hundreds of casinos all over the world, a large portion of which are in Las Vegas, Monte Carlo and Atlantic City. However, there is a very big difference between a casino and a luxury casino, sort of like the difference between James Bond and your average spy. If you are looking for the ultimate casino experience which combines high stake games in luxury settings, a beautiful casino ambience and VIP service, you may want to consider visiting the following casinos.

The Bellagio Casino – The Bellagio embodies luxury both in its hotel and casino and was considered to be the most expensive casino to be built in Vegas in 1998. Even now, few casinos over the world can rival the Bellagio for its standards of elegance and luxury services. The Bellagio Casino has one of the largest gaming sections in Vegas, boasting over 200 plush table games and more than 2000 slot machines including progressives and jackpots. Players will be able to enjoy Blackjack, poker, craps and roulette here and will be able to participate in very high stake games should they wish to. The casino even has a special poker room dedicated to high limit poker games and is reputed to sponsor the Five-Star World Poker Classic tourney.

The Monte Carlo Casino – Based in Monaco, the Monte Carlo Casino is one of repute, elegance and luxury. This gambling centre has been in existence since 1863 and was opened by Prince Charles III of Monaco. Its clientele include business magnates, royalty and celebrities and its casinos features less than 40 tables and over 300 slot machines. The building itself is magnificent and richly furnished in gold and bronze ornaments, hosting a marble atrium and ionic columns.
The casino also features exclusive high stake gaming rooms which have a black tie dress code.

Casino Metropol – Situated in Moscow, Russia, the Casino Metropol is one of the most elegant casinos in the country. Housing less than a dozen table games and covering blackjack, poker and roulette, the Casino Metropol only accepts clientele dressed in business attire and is part of the luxurious Hotel Metropol.

At the same time it must be remembered that not all the world’s best casinos are defined by luxury, as some like the Clermont Club are defined by their exclusivity. Not everyone is welcome at this exclusive members-only club situated in Berkeley Square in Mayfair, which includes royalty among its patrons. This club has no extravagant shows or entertainment features and hosts less than a dozen tables but serves champagne and treats its members like royalty.

The job of a VIP host involves a lot of responsibility as it requires the person concerned to handle the casino’s most important clientele. It is also one of the best paying and most interesting jobs to be had in a casino, and job seekers will find that the perks of this position increase with the caliber of the casino and the importance of the client.

A VIP host has to make the casino’s most important guests feel welcome and to ensure that they are cared for when they are on the casino floor. Unlike the job of the dealer, who is required to cater to all the visitors to his or her table, VIP hosts are usually allocated a few VIP customers to take care of during their stay in the casino. The casino VIP hosts have to be friendly, efficient and capable of being a personal concierge to their customers and catering to all their needs. The perks of this position include large tips, and acquiring a roster of high profile contacts. Furthermore, many VIP customers have been known to ask for a specific host or hostess by name, if that person has been particularly helpful to them.

If you are looking for a job in a casino as a VIP host, it is essential that you have some experience listed on your CV. Casinos do not recruit freshers or inexperienced people as their VIP hosts and experience in the casino industry or hospitality sector is a must if you are looking to land a job in reputed casino in Las Vegas.

If you have experience of working in a hotel or restaurant in the capacity of front desk staff, or better yet in a casino, you have good chances of landing a job as a VIP host. And, should you already have experience of working as a VIP host, the casino will view your job application with favour. In addition to work experience, it is necessary that the candidate have a pleasing demeanor, excellent people skills and good language abilities.

Most casinos require their VIP hosts to have university educations and a few letters to their name, while bilingual abilities will be seen as an added bonus. Many casinos require their VIP hosts to wear a uniform while others just require them to be very well dressed. Some of the services that hosts are required to provide for their customers include greeting them and showing them to their rooms, acquiring tickets for shows, making travel arrangements, providing room upgrades or perks and handling their queries.

It’s turning out to be more difficult than they anticipated. For 55 potential dealers at the SugarHouse Casino, the tricks of splitting a pile of clay chips are a challenge to be conquered. There will be a total of 300 dealers at the SugarHouse casinos, but 260 of those dealers will be veterans. Just forty of those plum positions will be given to newcomers. The casino is offering a free course for 215 candidates. The course takes eight weeks, with classes running a grueling twelve hours a day. The course is offered on weekends for those who can’t make it on weekends.

The group is evenly split between and women, with a wide range of ages represented. Some are new high school graduates looking for a challenge, while some are single mothers looking for a job with flexible hours that allows them to spend afternoons home with their children. Trainees are being taught to run blackjack, three card poker, and four card poker. Some will be taught to run roulette tables. Craps is considered a much more complex game to be croupier for, so the new group won’t be working the craps tables.

Across the state, casinos are preparing their dealers for the introduction of table games. The state’s Gaming Control Board has hired a former casino cheater to brief dealers, casino guards, and police on common attempts at fraud. George Joseph is an expert on spotting casino cheaters. He’s explained to casino staff about common problems including illegal bets, bottom dealing, and dice changing. According to Joseph, cheating is most prevalent at the craps table, where mainly seasoned dealers will be operating, but it doesn’t hurt to go over the tricks with them again before the table games go into operation.

All of Pennsylvania’s casinos will be performing a dry-run before they open for business. The croupiers and dealers will open a limited number of tables, and a limited number of guests, mostly family members of staff, will be allowed in to play for fake money. They’ll run through the games, using chips, exchanging them for fake money, and seeing that all of the processes run smoothly. If all is well, then the casinos will know that the dealers have been well-trained and that the casinos are ready to operate.

Gas and travel has gotten expensive enough that the South Jersey Transportation Authority is looking to give away E-ZPass credit. Well, not really, but it’s the most recent offering that the Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City has put up for grabs. They’ll be giving away quite a lot of EZPass credit and free gas to their casino patrons.

Come in to the Resorts with a Resorts Casino Club card on a Saturday or Sunday July 10-31, run your card in any slot machine or play at a table with rated table play between 6pm and 10pm on Saturday or 1pm to 6pm on Sunday. A winner will be selected every half hour during those hours. The prize is $500 in E-ZPass credit and $500 in gasoline.

For those who like to go “down the shore” as it is known to the locals, the prize can mean many more weekends in Atlantic City walking the boardwalk, eating salt-water taffy, and playing games at the local casinos.

Kathleen McSweeney, senior vice president of marketing for Resorts Casino Hotel said “We are proud to partner with the SJTA to design a program that will further encourage travel to the shore this summer. Atlantic City is within one day’s driving distance of one third of the country’s population, so this promotion was tailor made for people looking to vacation close to home.”

To get a Resorts card, players must be at least 21 years old. They can sign up for the card at the promotions desk when they are at the casino. That is also where they can verify any additional rules and regulations.

As far as promotions go, this is a pretty nice one. You can play pretty much any game as long as it’s a game that gets you rating. Whether you win or lose, you get entered in an additional drawing with a prize value of $1,000. While it won’t make you rich, it could certainly help you have some more vacation bucks, even if it doesn’t help with much else.

So if you’ve been wondering how to pay for your next long road trip, and you were thinking about trying to roll the dice for it, rolling them at Resorts might just give you a better chance at getting the bills paid. Just remember, there’s no guarantee. It’s just another chance at another super-practical prize that you can really use.

In my last post, I criticized the idea of the Tropicana eDeck, and compared having your children with you while gambling to images of Marge Simpson letting Baby Maggie loose in a casino. I’ve since discovered that there is a worse option. The Associated Press is reporting that Edwine Louissaint, 33 and David Augustin, 34 left two children, aged ten and one, in their car in the Foxwoods parking lot while they went inside to gamble. Cantor Gaming, all is forgiven. If parents are so addicted to gambling that they’ll leave their children unattended in the car if that’s the only way they can get their fix, then the eDeck is at least a step above that. At least your child won’t accidentally die of heatstroke or be kidnapped while you’re getting your fix.

For that matter, online casinos look better and better. The kids can be asleep in their beds and their parents can get their fix online. Of course, if you bring the casino into Augustin and Louissaint’s home, they might forget to feed the kids dinner.

The press is reporting that the parents were arrested and arraigned. Louissaint was released on bail, but the children were placed in protective custody. Lieutenant Paul Vance, chief spokesman for the Connecticut State Police said “We have a very strict law relative to this sort of thing. People think they can leave their kids in hotel rooms or otherwise unattended. But that is a big no-no in Connecticut.’’

So here’s the questions, Lieutenant Vance. Do the hotels offer babysitting? Do the police go room to room checking if there are children alone? There’s a real disconnect here. People who have gambling problems are often unable to relate consequences to their actions. They’ll think that they can hit the casino floor for a few minutes while the kids are sleeping, but a few minutes will turn into a few hours. Let’s face it, it happens to all of us, and not just with gambling. Ever play only one game of solitaire or freecell on your computer? Ever eat one potato chip?

What are the options for parents vacationing with their children if they want to hit the casino floor? Are they forced to take turns taking care of the children? What if you’re a single parent? Maybe the reality here is simpler. If you’re a parent, you shouldn’t be planning your vacation around gambling. You might go to a destination with a casino and plan to take a little spin on the casino floor while your partner or a babysitter watches the kids, but if you’re vacationing with the kids, try doing something they can do. Save the gambling for your adults-only vacations.

Recently, a man from Missouri pulled off a casino heist that he almost got away with. He might have succeeded if he hadn’t gotten greedy. The man, William Reece Lancaster, from Webb City Missouri took 25 cent chips from the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe’s Grand Lake Casino and using his expertise as a sign painter, turned them into $500 chips. The trouble began when the casino realized that there were many more than the 200 chips they’d purchased in circulation. In fact, Lancaster had added 140 such chips. The fake chips were well-made. The flaws were not visible to the naked eye.

Lancaster could have faced up to ten years in prison and fines of up to $250,000. He pleaded guilty to the charges and will serve six months of probation on house arrest and will have to pay $70,000 in restitution to the casino. Lancaster said that he has a gambling addiction.

Another criminal recently tried something not quite as well-conceived. He photographed chips from some of the bigger Las Vegas casinos and tried to get chip manufacturers to produce those chips for him. Folks, don’t try this at home. The chip manufacturers work pretty closely with the casinos and understand that their clientele need their chips to remain unique. The would-be criminal was immediately turned in.

The lesson here is obvious and twofold. First, if you want to fake chips, you’ll need to do it yourself, and second, you’ll have to make sure you’re not putting too many chips into circulation. In truth, it’s the same issue as any type of counterfeiting. If you fake one or two chips, and you do it yourself, you can probably get away with it. The effort isn’t worthwhile, though. If you want to fake enough to make the effort worthwhile, you’ll likely be creating enough to make someone suspicious. Moreover, if you try to play all of the chips yourself, you’ll definitely get caught.

Basically, it’s not worthwhile. Lancaster probably could have gotten away with his plan if he’d only made ten or twenty chips, but that would have been only a maximum of ten thousand dollars – hardly worth risking jail time for. The reality is that chip counterfeiting isn’t a great way to pull of a casino heist. The only upside is that since it’s a non-violent crime, the penalties are likely to be lighter than, say, armed robbery. Still, though, the best way to get a lot of money from a casino is to own the casino.

The music of the slot machines is subtly designed to engage your mind. Attractive ladies talk nicely to you. There are no clocks, no windows. You don’t feel the passage of time. Alcoholic drinks are plentiful, inexpensive, sometimes even free. It seems like the next big win is just around the corner. It’s the next hand, the next spin of the reels, the roulette wheel, the next roll of the dice. It’s easy to see how people get caught up in this Disneyland of the senses and lose money they didn’t expect to spend.

It’s not long before many of those people walk out with their pockets empty wondering what happened this time. There is, however, another way. That way involves setting limits for yourself and sticking to them. First, wear a wristwatch. Even if you don’t usually, put one on for the casino. Keep track of how much time you’re spending there. If you hit the casino floor after breakfast, set an alarm for lunch time so that you don’t forget to eat then. Second, set a limit on your spending. Decide on a limit, and stick to it. If you get under that limit, you are finished. It doesn’t matter how close you are to making a million dollars. Once your budget for the day hits zero, you need to leave the casino floor. If you’re playing blackjack and you don’t have enough to double or split, then don’t double or split. Just play out the hand and hope for the best.

Another place to limit yourself is your drinking. Drinking dulls your judgment. Enjoy a drink or two, but then switch to Coke or water or coffee. It will also keep you from getting dehydrated or drunk and doing something embarrassing that you’ll regret later on. Remember that it takes a drink about an hour to clear your system, so you can safely have one drink every hour. If you’re driving, be sure to finish the last one over an hour before you get into the car and have at least two cups of something without alcohol before you start driving. If you feel tired, sit down for a while and relax before you get behind the wheel, because a car accident can cost a lot more than casino losses.

Most importantly, place an upper limit on your money, too. Decide how much you have to win before you’ll walk out of the casino. If you win that amount, walk out with your winnings, and don’t look back! Have fun.

Everyone has some crazy method to beat the casinos. The truth is that every house-banked game has a house edge, so you can’t win by just playing a game well. It is, however, important to know how to identify a game with a good house edge versus a game with a bad house edge. For example, keno has the worst house edge in the casino. The best bet in keno is the prop bet that no row will have five or more hits, and even for that bet, there is a house edge of almost 7%. If you’re just picking random numbers, the lowest house edge is when you choose three spots, and even then, the house edge is around 38%. On video keno machines, the odds are a little better, but still not as good as regular slot machines. Another game to avoid is American roulette. European roulette has a house edge of 2.7% while its American neighbor has almost double that with 5.26%. That means you’ll lose twice as often!

If you’re going to play blackjack, be sure to learn the strategy carefully before you play, and never take insurance. That’s a sucker’s bet. Likewise, if you’re playing video poker, it’s important to learn the correct strategy. With a good strategy, if you’re playing a full-pay video poker machine, you can beat the house edge, so video poker is a good game to play.

There are a few ways to walk out with more than you came in with. One is to use free chips. If you’re in Las Vegas or Atlantic City, you can go casino to casino trolling for free chips. Play through the free chips once, and walk out with your winnings if there are any. Resist the urge to play through more than once. Remember that the money you made is totally free. Another way to win is to use comps. If you like to play through a lot of cash, especially on slots or video poker, stick to one casino, get their club card, and earn some good comps. Getting a free show, meal, or night at the hotel is a way of beating the casinos too.

The third way to win requires a lot of discipline, and relies on the variance of random play. Set a very low win limit. For example, if you walk into the casino with $50 and you play slots or video poker, there will probably be a point when you reach $75. If you choose to leave the machine at that point, then you’ll have earned $25 clear. If you keep going for the big win, you’ll likely lose it all. The most important way to get the most out of your casino experience, though, is to have fun! If you had fun, then you’ve already beaten the casino.

The story of the formation of Las Vegas as a gambling haven has already been told here, but the death of Bugsy Siegel did not mark the end of organised crime’s control of the city in fact it marked the beginning. As the New York mob began pumping more and more union workers money into the city in order to build more casinos, so the Chicago mob began to open its eyes at the huge amounts of money being brought into their coffers by their use of the skim.

The skim is a racket that was made famous in the movie Casino, starring Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci. The skim is when a mob accomplice enters into the vaults of the casino and takes out a certain amount of cash before it can be declared as earnings of the casino to the IRS. He would then take it back to wherever his bosses were sitting waiting for it. This meant that the mob was gaining money for doing nothing. All of the initial cash was put up by union officials using the pension funds of their employees and all they had to do was sit back and enjoy the piles of money that were brought directly to them.

Under Sam Giancana in the 1960s the Chicago “outfit” also began investing in hotels and casinos in Las Vegas. Allegedly there was a deal made between the different mob families that split control over the strip in a way that satisfied all concerned. This was right about the time that Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack were playing at the hottest Las Vegas spots and while the mob were looking at how to get Kennedy elected president.

As long as mob control of the Las Vegas strip was kept under wraps local authorities didn’t cause any problems but the moment when bodies started showing up around Las Vegas a crackdown on mob influence began. It was Tony Spilotro who really brought the heat down on the Las Vegas mob with his flamboyant style and flagrant disregard for authority. Although that was not the end of the mob influence in the town the writing was already on the wall when corporations, starting with Howard Hughes, began buying up both casinos and huge plots of land on which to build bigger, better and brighter casinos. Though the hand of organised crime has been taken out of Las Vegas their legacy remains with casino dealers still saying “it was better when the mob were running things”
